I didn't have that much trouble with rubberbanding and the game is really fun, although it will eventually grow boring like any game if you play it too much. Atm I'm in the top 10 and i hope I'll still be in the top 100 by the end of the event.
How you get a good time depends on race tactics, other players not interfering with you, luck with the boxes and the course you roll.

I'm extremely disappointed with the way this was handled. It had the potential to be a really nice feature, but the horrible lag and luck of the items really kills it. The constant rubberbanding really gets on my nerves.

it`s nice for some rounds if you`ve nothing else to do.
but trying to get the gamer title or to break into the top100 ? nah, to much luck dependend and the rubberbanding really gets on my nerves after a while.
btw 456k with one super beetle was my best. without super beetle you can win some races ( i had 4 consec wins with no super) but canĀ“t get even close to the top100 scores.

I'll let you know mine once I finish a race. =_=' I normally don't lag much in GW except the first 10-20 seconds upon entering an instance, but I can't do anything in races.

It was seriousely just luck xD 3 people decided to leave so it was only me and 1 more guy. never got stopped once. Got a echo on the first set of boxes and kept it. Then i got a superrollerbeetle on the ones insde the cave. I then Echo-ed it assoon as i got out the cave on that rough bit that slows u down. Took the shortcut through the water and used the echo beetle so there it was no slowing down from the water. From there it was smooth sailing. So i had nothing which slowed me down, no stops from enemys, and even 2 super rollerbeetles with the shortcut through the water and still didnt get into top 100.

Maybe you get more points by doing knockdowns?
Or maybe there are little stunts you can do?

Before you all blame ANet for the lag, why doesn't one of you do a traceroute to see where the bottleneck is? You'd find out that there a lot of potential bottlenecks on the path there.
Then again, what do I know? I only do router/backbone surveillance for a living.

Anyway I seriously haven't ran into the rubberbanding issue that alot of people have, guess im lucky on that part (best score is only 442k tho, no lucky with the powerups)
To me its just like Mario Kart (which I loved), I'd love to have this as a perm feature.

I could care less about the top 100, and you have to realize that far from everyone is doing these races, you wont get 3.000.000 different scores. probably not even half (inactive accounts, multiple accounts per person for storage or additional characters, and the people who just aren't around for the even). and then there's the people who just plain suck at racing games, no offense to anybody, but some people just aren't "naturally good racers" if that makes sense, or they just don't like the game genre.
all that aside, its not the person who's better at the game that wins, its the person who gets the most luck on that round (the "right" powerups, and either no lag, or get lucky and cut a corner right so you don't rubberband)
i don't expect to get anywhere near the top 100, cause i fail in the lag part, i lag like crazy, and i rubberband backwards several times during a race,
normally I'm decent at racing games, but this minigame is a horrible replica of a racing game. it just does not work with the game mechanics.
in any normal racing game you slow down by turning, the tighter turn the more momentum you lose, in GW you can make a 180 degree turn and keep the momentum. this means that with no lag you can cut the best line through the track always.
in short, its a great idea. but horrible implementation.
EDIT: to the person above me (erfweiss) normally in a racing game people lag too, but you can drive on your own hardware and transmit your location to the server, here its the opposite, you tell what you're doing, and it doesn't matter what your computer thinks you're doing, if the server says you're stuck behind a rock a mile back, then you are stuck behind a rock a mile back. so even if arenanet is not directly responsible for the lag, their game coding is responsible for the effects that this lag causes
edit2: this wasn't meant offensively by the way

Ya after investigating (playing), i found out that not all lag is your fault nor is it in the gw client. In fact it is other people who contribute to your lag. Then i thought back to my days of playing halo and the effect known as standby-ing. Now i doubt this would work with gw, but what happens is basically your "lags" in telling the sever what its doing, in effect on someone else computer you see people flickering across the screen. This is called, well duh, lag jumping. So in effect you can actually do better while you lag because the game doesnt receive the full information it should. Now this isnt the greatest technical explanation, but ive witnessed it many times during this mini-game. Someone will be rolling then jump side to side then infront of you. Or when you get knocked down you will teleport back.
In short, someone with a bad connection and real lag, can screw up the game for everyone.

It could be the game coding. I don't know, I haven't logged in to GW in 4 days due to work. It also has a lot to do with network congestion. For example, I ran a traceroute to www.arenanet.com. As you can see below, it's losing packets in the alter.net network.
10 37 ms 37 ms 37 ms 0.so-0-0-3.BR6.DFW9.ALTER.NET [204.255.173.1]

Just because i read this im going to comment. Now first this isnt a normal racing game. Second do you actually know why you slow down when you turn? The reason you slow down during a turn is because of friction which to some degree racing games take into account in their physics engines. The engine that this mini-game runs on, cannot be as complex as those of stand alone racing games. It would take to long to develop. This mini-game is not meant to duplicate other racing engines. In fact its almost similar to Mario Kart, but this version calculates less side ways forces as opposed to momentum due to changes in terrain. It will not be perfect, it probably is flawed, coming from an engine that the z-axis works improperly on, but for the most part it works and its fun.
Its definately refreshing to see a new game type in GW.
And how the the engine interupts packet-loss does have an effect on the game. It sucks. So i suppose its a little bit of everyones fault.

Man at least share some tips namekey. I dont need to get top 10, i'd be happy with like 99.
And no you dont get points for consecutive wins. Unless they changed something from when i got my 12 streak, because my points didnt increase.

No you dont, my 12 consec didn have to do anything with my score.
btw .. yes getting a top 100 score is based on luck pretty much .. they key is to get a small lead from the beginning so you wont get in all the ram mania then hope for a good first ? box then race of never to be heard from again .. and off course 2 super roller beetles.

~450k is getting a perfect start and echo super, so you'll need 2x the combo for the 460k+ scores. I've had lots of people go to crates and sit on them trying to get the combo from the start, and those people are the ones who tend to be in the top 100 already.
